History
The origins of Contignano date to before the year 1000.A.D. Some historians believe that a Roman villa, erected in the 2nd or 3rd century A.D. was the first settlement. The villa was downhill from the site where the medieval castle was subsequently built. Among the documents available today, it is stated that Contignano and the surrounding area was sold by count Aldobrandeschi and deeded to a certain Foscolo di Pietro in the year 1028 A.D. Subsequently, the estate was donated to the abbey of St. Salvatore and remained as its property for about three centuries, until it became part of the domain of the powerful Farnese family around the beginning of the 14th century Monte Amiata visto dalla tenuta

Following several historic events and various owners, Contignano became a “free and independent” municipality in the territory of the sovereign Republic of Siena. This status would eventually be revoked by the Grand – duke Petro Leopoldo Hapsburg Lorena on Jan 1st 1776.

On April 29th,1876, part of the estate, including the main part of the medieval castle was acquired for 80.000 liras (approximately 4,000 US dollars! ) by Antonio Muziarelli, the ancestor of the present owners.
